Update from Companies House - The use of an appropriate address and scam warning

Companies House have issued a reminder about new responsibilities under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act for businesses regarding the use of an ‘appropriate address’. Plus a warning about scam letters.

Rules for registered office addresses – is yours an ‘appropriate address’?

There are new and updated rules (updated 15.07.24) for registered office addresses.

These rules mean that companies must, at all times, have an ‘appropriate address’ as their registered office.

Companies House deems an address to be ‘appropriate’ if, in the ordinary course of events:

  • a document addressed to the company, and delivered there by hand or by post, would be expected to come to the attention of a person acting on behalf of the company
  • the delivery of documents there is capable of being recorded by the obtaining of an acknowledgement of delivery

Be aware of scam letters claiming to be from Companies House

Companies House have reported a number of suspicious letters claiming to be from them. The letter claims you need to make payment for ‘Enhanced Web Filing Access’.

They warn business owners not to follow any instructions in this letter as it is a scam.
